Head On Photo Festival April 2015

In April 2015 Foto Friendship held its first exhibition as part of the Head On Photo Festival in Sydney. The exhibition held at the ACA in the Italian Forum in Leichhardt featured a glimpse of the students that took part in the project from Timor-Leste’s capital Dili and the remote mountainous sub-district of Hato-Builico. For many of these students it was the first time they had ever used a camera.

The Head On Foundation established in 2008, “is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the work of photographers at all stages of career, encouraging excellence and innovation, making photography accessible to all and raising awareness of important issues through photography.”

Children everywhere share interests, passions, hopes and dreams. Australian children have little knowledge of their close neighbours in Timor-Leste. Over half the population is under 18 years old. Children do not have access to cameras or opportunities for self expression enjoyed by most children in Australia. The personal stories featured at the Head On Exhibition were just a taste of Foto Friendship, a volunteer-led project encouraging children’s creativity and self-expression through visual storytelling.
